About us
The Kaiser Permanente Behavioral Health Training Institute (KP BHTI) launched its first cohort in January 2022. In partnership with the Kaiser Permanente Mental Health Scholars Academy (MHSA), KP BHTI provides clinical training opportunities to KP employees for career advancement in Behavioral Health. The KP BHTI prioritizes the learner experience while providing essential clinical support to our service areas and members.

Licensed Providers
Experienced Associates transition into licensed positions upon completing 3,000 clinical hours and passing licensing exams.

Programs in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine
Pre-Masters Programs
Pre-Masters programming currently consists of MFT Trainee practicum and MSW Trainee field placement for first and second year MSW students.
MFT Practicum
MFT practicum is available to students currently enrolled in MHSA-affiliated Marriage and Family Therapy programs. To qualify for practicum, the student must meet all academic requirements to participate in practicum as an MFT Trainee.
MSW Practicum 1
MSW practicum in Psychiatry is available to students currently enrolled in an MHSA-affiliated Master of Social Work program. To qualify for practicum, the student must meet all academic requirements to participate in practicum.
MSW Practicum 2
Second year MSW practicums in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine are available to students currently enrolled in MHSA-affiliated Master of Social Work programs. Practicum 2 concentrates on an area of focus in Behavioral Health for MSW second year students. Inpatient and Partial Hospitalization practicum opportunities at KP’s Mental Health Center are expected August 2024. Social Medicine practicum opportunities expected 2025.
Associate Programming
Clinical supervision of Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapists, Professional Clinical Counselors, and Social Workers is offered in Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine, and Social Medicine.
